Popayan The White City

by Larry
(US)

Popayan is perhaps Colombias most beautiful Colonial City. Founded in 1537 The city hosts the one of the largest Processions in the world during Semana Santa. It is a very clean city and easy to navigate.

The weather is very pleasant with highs averaging 78 and the night time lows of about 58. I often joke with my friends that if Popayan were anywhere but Colombia...........we probably couldn,t afford the real estate. But the reality is that housing and cost of living is quite low compared to other areas.

I found Popayan to be 40 to 50% cheaper to live with a better quality of life. I am an American who now lives full time here in Popayan. You are welcome to write me if you need more info. I am not a real estate person........

I am just a 48 year old gringo enjoying retirement. A retirement not possible in the USA considering what i invested and own.

Best Regards, Larry

Looking for a rental in December
by: Barrie

Hi Folks,

I will visit Popayan from Mid December until a few days after the New Year. I am looking for a furnished rental for that period, hopefully, near the town center.

Anyone have any leads?

Fascinating place indeed. It would be great fun to visit it. Thank you for sharing so nice and informative article. Travelling is my admiration, it helps get a great deal of positive emotions, strengths and experience. If someone is too busy with writing their academic assignments instead it is better to entrust this task to professional writers http://academic-writings.com and enjoy your trip and excellently written custom paper.

Hi Larry,

Neat post! I'm going to be moving to Popayan in June for a volunteer teaching position. I'll be in Colombia for at least 7 months. Could you recommend any site or place I can investigate for an apartment or living situation? I'm super excited to come to Colombia!!! Ckcraigkc@msn.com

You will be welcome
by: Mauricio

Steven, thanks for your post. I'm sure you and Larry would not be the only "gringos" in Popayán (Don't worry for the mispelling, it sounds as you wrote it: "Popayon") As Far as I know, there is no better place for a fisherman than the Patia River or the lakes at El Eden.

heading to Popayan
by: steven

Hey Larry and Mauricio, nice posts, thank you, I am currently living near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico with my wife who is Colombiana. We will be moving to Popayon in a year or two and would very much like to start corresponding with a few people who live in Popayon.
We will be in Popayon next August for a month, and hopefully start getting to know people in the area. My wifes family has lived there for many years. I am interested in starting a conifer nursery for reforesting to mountains and maybe Christmas trees, I also am an avid fisherman. You can email me at stevenprichter@gmail.com thanks,
Steve

Property values...........
by: Larry

Popayan is currently seeing a growth spurt. The city is poised to explode in terms of opportunity and growth. The bigger cities like Medellin, Cali and Cartagena are considerably more expensive to live in and buy homes in. ( Although, they still represent a bargain compared to the USA) While Popayan still offers bargain priced housing and living cost. Considering the quality and cost of living, i would encourage anyone to seriously check Popayan out. I and a few other Americans love calling this place HOME!! Also, if your not quite ready to retire......business opportunities abound here in Popayan!!!

More about living here..........
by: Anonymous

Mauricio, I encourage anyone interested in Colombia to consider Popayan. We are nestled in the Mountains and the weather is extremely pleasant. I often take rides to outlaying areas and have driven down to Equador which is not far away. Southern Colombia has dramatic landscapes and countryside. I enjoy all the small towns and the local foods each have to offer. I lived in Cali before for several months........... but my heart was always calling to me to get to Popayan. The cost of living is 40 to 50% cheaper then that of Cali. Now that i am retired at 48 years old, ( something i wouldn,t be able to accomplish had i stayed in the USA) i spend my days riding my motorcycle thru the mountains, i go to the market and buy fresh meats and produce, and often make lunch and homemade salsa!! The evenings are spent having some computer time on my modern high speed connection, reading books or entertaining friends. We also enjoy family time and watch movies after my daughters homework is done. My daughter goes to a private girls only catholic school. Along with private transport it cost me only $100 a month!!!!!!!! What would private school and transport cost me back in the USA??? Lastly, when i need to get some city life in my blood......... i simply drive the 1 and half hours thru the beautiful countryside to Cali. In Cali there are numerous shopping malls, resturants and discos!!! The nightlife is amazing as are the women. I love this place............

Popayan

Larry, thank you very much for your contribution. It's good to let the world know that there are other beautiful cities in Colombia different from Cartagena or Medellin also with many attractive things to offer for foreign visitors.
